I love to remember the books I enjoyed as a child. You could say that I had unusual tastes. I preferred adventure, excitement, and weirdness to any normal book series like The Babysitter’s Club. With that in mind, I give you my favorite book series as a child. I loved these books and still have them on my bookshelf today. If you have kids that enjoy slightly offbeat stories, then they will love these three book series:

My Teacher is an Alien by Bruce Coville – What would you do if you found out your teacher was an alien that was planning to take over the earth? Well, if you are anything like the kids in this series, you try to stop him. When a pretty girl, a nerd, and a bully team up, anything is possible. Go on adventures with the kids as they uncover alien plots, unmask green men, and escape abduction.

Bunnicula by James Howe – Narrated by a dog, this book will have kids rolling on the floor with laughter. Howard, the long-suffering and faithful hound, must keep his friend, an unstable and paranoid cat named Chester, from assassinating their family’s newest pet: Bunnicula, a rabbit who sucks the juice out of vegetables. Is Chester right in thinking that Bunnicula is out to kill the family, or should Howard defend the helpless bunny? You’ll have to read to find out!

The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks by Nancy McArthur – Two brothers share a room. One brother is very neat and the other is very messy. Needless to say, they don’t get along very well. But when they find a pair of mysterious seeds and plant them in pots in their room, why do they hear strange slurping sounds in the middle of the night? Why do their socks keep disappearing? And did those plants just… move?

These book series are fondly remembered by me and even by my siblings. We had such fun reading and rereading about these adventures. I am sure that your children will love them also. After all, who doesn’t’ like a tale of mystery, mayhem and fun?
