Brooklyn James, author/singer/songwriter, releases OFFICIAL music video for 'Can't Get It Right,' track #4 from the original music soundtrack to the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Quarter Finalist, The Boots My Mother Gave Me.

"Brooklyn James' soundtrack to her novel The Boots My Mother Gave Me does more than give a clever feminist twist to the title. Her songs serve as chapters themselves, underlining James' deft ability as a storyteller and songwriter." -Margaret Moser, The Austin Chronicle

The inspiration behind 'Can't Get It Right' stemmed from Brooklyn's infamous Plan B. Desiring to be a writer of both songs and stories from the time she can remember, Brooklyn lacked sincere confidence and faith in herself. It's no secret that creating for a living can be an uphill climb. Convinced she must, first, secure Plan B...a 'real' job with a 401K and an insurance plan, Brooklyn put her writing dreams on the back burner in pursuit of her education. An education she deeply enjoyed, mind you. Education in any format is ultimately going to excel one's nature and career path. However, after much time, energy and money spent on obtaining three degrees (B.S. in Animal Science, B.S. in Nursing, and an M.A. in Communication), she swiftly returned to her initial aspiration, Plan A...writing songs and stories.

"I had just finished my Master's curriculum. I sat on the front steps to my apartment, reflecting on all the time I spent in securing Plan B, when my heart was still attached to Plan A. I shook my head, scolding myself, 'I just can't get it right.' And, the light bulb went off! I jumped up, grabbed a napkin and started penning the song. That's what we do as artists, right? We create out of everything...happiness, disappointment, love, anger, loss," Brooklyn says.

'Can't Get It Right' was the turning point for Brooklyn. Ever an eternal optimist, she took the song and it's positive hook literally, with renewed focus in getting her music and writing career right. With the Amazon ABNA nod and success The Boots My Mother Gave Me (book & music soundtrack) has enjoyed, Brooklyn's journey is a credit to the fact that it is never too late to start living your dreams.

"This video, along with the book and album, have been a long time coming. It's hard sometimes, especially in the instant gratification world we live in. But, nobody gets there overnight. Nobody becomes somebody without going through some things, some challenges. I can honestly say, my efforts over the past few years have paid off. I've finally learned how to channel my energy and push through with perseverance, while employing my patience in allowing things the appropriate time to come to fruition. If we can master these things, there is nothing we cannot accomplish. Planning, preparation, patience, perseverance and performance will ultimately yield successful outcomes. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. Maybe not as soon as you think they should. But, they will, if you keep putting in the time and the work. To all of my Indie author and musician friends, I say, keep on keeping on, and Godspeed! Robert Collier said it best, 'Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.'"
